A Tallgrass Triumph
On September 29, 1976, years of campaigning by Highland conservationist Irene Herlocker-Meyer paid off when Congress passed legislation expanding the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to include Hoosier Prairie.
Known as the "Queen of the Prairie," she helped rally conservation groups, lawmakers and local residents to protect the rare tallgrass habitat from development.
President Gerald Ford signed the bill the following month, and Indiana purchased the prairie for permanent protection in January 1977. Fifty years later, her efforts remain an important part of Highland's conservation history..
Highland's Town Council will hold public hearings on the proposed 2027 budgets and consider the Town's 20-year Comprehensive Master Plan on Monday, September 28, at the Highland Municipal Building, 3333 Ridge Road.
Highland's 2027 Budget Hearings Set for Tonight
The Highland residents have an opportunity to weigh in on the Town's proposed 2027 budgets when the Town Council holds public hearings Monday, September 28, at 6:30 p.m. Separate hearings are scheduled for the civil town budget, Water District debt service fund and Sanitary District budget.
The hearings give residents a chance to review the proposed spending plans and share comments before the budgets are adopted.
Monday's meeting also includes the anticipated final vote on Highland's proposed 20-year Comprehensive Master Plan, which outlines priorities for future development, housing, transportation and community improvements. The meeting takes place at the Highland Municipal Building, 3333 Ridge Road.

Highland Trojans Celebrate Homecoming With Parade + Friday Night Football
It's Homecoming Week for the Highland Trojans, and the community is invited to celebrate with a downtown parade on Wednesday, September 30!
The parade begins at 5:30 p.m., following a 5 p.m. lineup, and travels along Highway Avenue from the public parking lot west of the Citgo station to Main Square Park near Delaware Street.
Spectators can watch from downtown, with parking available near Region Records and Les Cafe Pancake House or at the former Traditions Restaurant & Pub lot.
The celebration continues Friday, October 2, when the Trojans host Munster at 7 p.m. for their Homecoming and Senior Night football game at Highland High School.
Whether you're cheering along the parade route or from the stands, it's a chance to show your Trojan pride!
