πŸ‘» Highland’s Haunted Homes Are Lit Up for October

Several Highland homeowners have turned their yards into full Halloween attractions this month, giving families plenty of reasons to take an evening drive or walk around town.

The lineup ranges from fog-filled cemeteries and moving figures to skeleton-filled yards, dragons, castles, and even a free walk-through haunted house. Some displays are designed to be spooky, while others are gentler for families with younger kids.

Johnston’s House of Horror returns for its fifth year with a free walk-through haunt on the final three weekends of October. Organizers say they wanted to keep admission free again this year, especially after the Aug. 11 storms left many Highland families dealing with cleanup, outages, and unexpected expenses. Each night starts with a Not-So-Scary hour from 6:30-7:30 p.m. before things get scarier for the rest of the evening.

Other stops include Highland Haunted Haven on Anthony Place, known for its fog-filled cemetery, moving figures, music, and light show; Dragons of Lakeside on 100th Street, where dragons guard a Halloween castle; The Haunting of 43rd Street, with zombies and creatures lurking in the yard; and the skeleton-filled Boneyard on Eder.

Most displays can be enjoyed from the sidewalk or from your car, while a few invite visitors to walk through designated areas. Hours may change because of weather, so check the display’s Facebook page or group before heading out.

And one important reminder before you start your Highland Halloween tour: these are private homes. Stay on public walkways or clearly marked paths, supervise children, keep hands off the decorations, and be respectful of neighbors.

The little ones get their own fun, too: a Trunk or Treat lines Highway Avenue from 4 to 8 p.m. It's a great excuse to support the local spots that keep downtown lively while the kids fill their candy bags.

I will updated with the participating restaurants and other details as the date gets closer.

Highland Neighbors for Sustainability hosts its 4th annual Pumpkin Smash on Nov. 7 at Main Square Park, where carved pumpkins can be smashed and then donated to a local farm. Image courtesy of Highland Neighbors for Sustainability.

Give Your Jack-o'-Lantern a Smashing Send-Off

Saturday, Nov. 7

Don’t toss that jack-o’-lantern in the trash. Highland Neighbors for Sustainability is hosting its 4th annual Pumpkin Smash on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Main Square Park.

Bring your carved pumpkins and take aim at the bullseye, or just smash away. Every pumpkin gets a second life because they’re donated to a local farm afterward.

One important rule: no paint, glitter, or glue on the pumpkins so they can still be used by the farm.

It’s a fun way for the whole family to wrap up spooky season and keep pumpkins out of the landfill.
