Walk Together for Hope at Highland's Out of the Darkness Event
The Northwest Indiana Out of the Darkness Walk returns to Wicker Memorial Park in Highland on Saturday, October 3, bringing families, friends and neighbors together to support suicide prevention.
Hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the event raises funds for research, education, advocacy and community programs.
Registration and community activities begin at 11 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 1:30 p.m. and a noncompetitive walk. Participants can visit resource tables, take part in activities focused on hope and healing, and receive complimentary honor beads representing their personal connections to the cause.
Registration is free, and participants can walk individually, join a team or fundraise to support AFSP's work. Whether you're remembering someone, supporting a loved one or simply showing up for the community, the walk offers an opportunity to connect and help make a difference.

Kennedy Commons Moves Closer to a Major Community Grant
Highland's proposed Kennedy Commons is one step closer to becoming a reality after the Town's Redevelopment Commission was named one of 12 finalists for Legacy Foundation's $4 million Love Where You Live grant program.
The project would transform the vacant lot next to the Kennedy Avenue post office into a small community gathering space featuring public art, benches, bike racks and native plants.
At its September 14 study session, the commission presented two versions of the project, one estimated at $1 million and a smaller option costing approximately $500,000. The latest designs include permeable pavers and low-maintenance landscaping, with truck-delivered watering during the first year to avoid an estimated $40,000 water-line installation.
Highland is scheduled to present its proposal to Legacy Foundation on October 13, with grant recipients expected to be announced October 30. If selected, Kennedy Commons could turn a currently unused downtown lot into a welcoming place for residents to gather.
