After more than 30 years serving downtown Highland, Maria’s Buena Cocina is preparing to close as owners Maria Curiel and her family retire. The restaurant will serve its final customers Saturday.
Maria’s Buena Cocina Closing After More Than 30 Years in Highland
Another longtime Highland restaurant is saying goodbye as Maria’s Buena Cocina, located at 2936 Highland Avenue, prepares to close permanently after more than three decades.
Owner and head chef Maria Curiel built a loyal following with scratch-made Mexican dishes, fresh daily salsas and guacamole, and favorites like steak tacos, crispy potato tacos, and queso fundido with chorizo.
Known for personally welcoming guests, Maria made the cozy downtown restaurant feel like home for generations of customers. The owners announced their retirement in a heartfelt social media post, thanking the community for years of loyalty, shared meals, and cherished memories.
Coming shortly after Town Club’s closure, the news marks the departure of another longtime Highland dining favorite. Maria’s will remain open through Saturday, giving customers one last chance to enjoy their favorite dishes and say goodbye.

Highland Schools Enforce Bell-to-Bell Personal Device Ban
The School Town of Highland is enforcing a full bell-to-bell ban on personal cellphones, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, and smartwatches throughout the entire school day this year. High school students have been issued secure lockers to store devices during class hours.
