Whatever Happened To… Lincoln’s O?
Remember those massive Lincoln’s subs served on perfectly toasted French bread? What started as Lincoln Carry Outs in Gary in 1963 grew into a Northwest Indiana favorite, eventually bringing the family’s popular Calumet City operation to downtown Highland.
With sandwiches like the famous “US Steel” and “Bunny Girl,” Lincoln’s became a longtime favorite for generations of local customers. But here’s something you might not know: the “O” in Lincoln’s O stood for “Original,” added to distinguish the Highland shop from other Lincoln’s sandwich shops owned by a different family.
Although the downtown Highland location closed several years ago, ending a familiar chapter in local food history, the Lincoln’s name lives on at a surviving location in nearby Hobart. Reminder: Open Burning of Leaves and Storm Debris Is Prohibited in Highland
The Town of Highland is reminding residents that open burning of leaves, garbage, or rubbish is prohibited within town limits under Highland Municipal Code 12.15.050 (Chapter 12.15, Solid Waste Management), a rule in place since 2000.
The reminder comes as many residents continue clearing tree limbs and yard debris left by the August storm. Burning clean firewood in an approved fire pit is still permitted.

27th Annual Victory for Veterans Memorial Ride Returns to Highland
A police-escorted motorcycle ride, live music, food trucks, and more come to Wicker Memorial Park on September 27 to support Northwest Indiana veterans.
The 27th Annual Victory for Veterans Memorial Ride returns to Wicker Memorial Park in Highland on Sunday, September 27, bringing motorcycle riders and the community together for a cause. Registration runs from 8–10 a.m., followed by the police-escorted Victory Ride at 10:30 a.m., an hour earlier than in previous years.
Registration costs $25 for individual riders or $40 for couples. Proceeds benefit Homeless Veterans Housing Solutions and improvements to the Wicker Park Veterans Memorial.
The festivities continue at noon with live music, food trucks, a cash bar, and a 50/50 raffle. Whether you're riding or coming out to show your support, it's an opportunity to give back to those who served..
