A Dairy Hall Worship Service
On September 26, 1954, Redeemer Lutheran Church of Highland held its very first official worship service, gathering 162 devoted locals in a rented hall at the Pleasant View Dairy before their permanent church could be constructed at 9009 Kennedy Avenue where they continue to hold regular weekend worship services today.

Northwest Indiana residents hit hard by August's historic derecho and subsequent power outages will soon have access to a one-stop disaster recovery center in Gary, opening Sept. 23-25 and Sept. 28-Oct. 2.
The center will connect storm victims with FEMA aid, state relief funds, housing vouchers, and other critical services. More than $100 million in combined federal and state assistance has already been distributed, but the deadline to apply for individual help is Oct. 25.
It will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 23 to Sept. 25 and from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 at the United Steelworkers Local #1014, at 1301 Texas St., in Gary.
Applications can be submitted online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.
You can also request up to $5,000 from the state's disaster relief fund to cover immediate home repairs or replace damaged household goods that insurance didn't pay for. Those applications can be made by calling 2-1-1 or through the in.gov/dhs website, and claimants may need to provide photos, videos, receipts, or other evidence to back up their requests.period.

Backyard Barbecue Festival Returns to Highland
Highland’s Backyard Barbecue Festival returns September 24–27 at Main Square Park with four days of food, music, rides, and family fun.
Visitors can expect barbecue from Deon’s BBQ, live music at the Gazebo stage, a beer garden, craft vendors, carnival rides, and other activities throughout the weekend.
The festival runs Thursday from 5–10:30 p.m., Friday from 5–11 p.m., Saturday from 2–11 p.m., and Sunday from 2–9 p.m. Sunday will also include a sensory-friendly carnival from 1–3 p.m. before the regular festival hours begin.
Entertainment changes throughout the weekend, with multiple bands and performers scheduled each day. It’s one of Highland’s bigger community events of the fall and an easy way to spend a few hours close to home..
