Handmade Highland Brings Local Art and Fall Finds to Zandstra’s
The 5th annual Handmade Highland returns Saturday, October 4, bringing local artists and fall shopping together at Zandstra’s Farm and Greenhouse. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., more than 20 local artists will fill the greenhouse with handmade goods and one-of-a-kind creations.
The event also coincides with Farmers Market Saturday, giving visitors a chance to stock up on seasonal favorites while browsing locally made art and gifts. Hosted by Zandstra’s Farm and Greenhouse and the Highland Arts Council, the event is designed as an easy way to support local makers while getting a head start on holiday shopping. You’ll find it at 10202 Kennedy Ave. in Highland.
Whether you’re looking for something handmade, something fresh, or just a fall outing close to home, there should be plenty to browse.

FEMA Help Is Still Available - Gary One-Stop Shop Ends Friday
Highland and other Lake County residents affected by the August storms still have time to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance, but the local One-Stop Shop in Gary closes Friday, October 2.
The center at United Steelworkers Local 1014, 1301 Texas St., is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offers free, in-person help with FEMA applications and other disaster recovery resources, with no appointment needed.
Residents have until October 25 to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance for eligible uninsured storm-related losses. Some households may also qualify for lodging expense reimbursement if they paid for a hotel after being displaced and did not receive FEMA Displacement Assistance.
Disaster Unemployment Assistance is also available for eligible workers and self-employed residents whose jobs were affected by the storms, with applications due October 27.
