👻 The Cline Avenue Ghost: Haunted Highway or Hoosier Folklore?

Wednesday Rewind: The Story Behind It

For generations, Northwest Indiana drivers have traded stories about a mysterious woman in white along Cline Avenue near the Calumet River.

Depending on who tells it, she is a grieving mother searching for children lost in the river, a heartbroken woman who died nearby, or a vanishing hitchhiker who disappears before reaching her destination.

The story is not just modern internet folklore. Researchers were documenting versions of the Cline Avenue Ghost by the early 1970s, and folklorists have linked it to the broader La Llorona tradition, the centuries-old legend of a grieving woman associated with water and lost children.

So, is there really a ghost on Cline Avenue?

There’s no historical evidence proving a haunting, but the legend itself is very real and has been part of Northwest Indiana folklore for decades.

🧭 New Help for Families of Loved Ones Who Wander: Project Lifesaver Comes to Highland

Families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism or another cognitive condition will soon have a new local resource if a loved one wanders away.

Beginning Dec. 1, Highland Fire and Police will launch Project Lifesaver, a program designed to help first responders quickly locate enrolled people who are prone to wandering.

Participants wear a small radio transmitter on the wrist or ankle that sends out an individualized signal. If an enrolled person goes missing, the caregiver calls 911 and tells dispatch the person is part of Project Lifesaver. Trained first responders can then use specialized equipment to track the signal and help locate them.

Highland says the program is being funded through donations, so there is no cost to participating families.

Registration opens Nov. 15. Families can call 219-923-9876 or stop by the Highland Fire Department at 2901 Highway Ave., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to schedule an appointment or learn more.
