⚽ Highland Girls Soccer Rolls Into Sectional Final

Highland High School’s girls soccer team is one win away from a sectional championship after back-to-back shutouts this week.

The Trojans opened Class 2A Sectional 17 play Tuesday with a 12-0 win over River Forest, scoring 10 goals in the first half. On Wednesday, Highland followed with a 2-0 semifinal win over Lowell to advance to the sectional final.

Savannah Ballard and Grace Houchin scored for Highland, with Maddy Gora adding an assist. Goalkeeper Gianna Johnson made five saves to preserve the shutout as Highland held Lowell scoreless for all 80 minutes.

Highland, now 9-8, will face host Illiana Christian (9-5-1) for the Class 2A Sectional 17 championship on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at Illiana Christian High School in Dyer.
A win Saturday would give Highland the sectional title and send the Trojans on to the next round of the IHSAA state tournament.

🇺🇸 Wave Hello to History: America 250 Relay Rolls Through Highland Oct. 14

A piece of American history is expected to pass right through Highland next week.

The American Discovery 250 Relay, a coast-to-coast journey celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday, is scheduled to travel through Highland on the Erie Lackawanna Trail around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Relay participants are carrying a copy of the Declaration of Independence as they make their way across the country. Highland Parks Director Mindi Ray encouraged residents to line the trail, make signs and cheer on the relay as it passes through town.

Good places to watch include the Ridge Road and Kennedy Avenue trailhead, the Main Square Park area, and the 45th Street trail crossing near Ellen Drive.

Bring the kids, wave a flag and give the relay a Highland welcome as this once-in-a-generation journey rolls through town.

Want to follow the route or learn how to participate? Visit the American Discovery Trail 250 Relay page.

🍹 Sip and Stroll: Highland’s DORA Is Officially Open

Downtown Highland’s new DORA - Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area - is officially active, allowing adults to purchase approved alcoholic drinks to go from participating businesses and carry them within the marked downtown district.

The DORA operates year-round from noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Current participating vendors are Fuzzyline, Growlers, Langel’s and Jose’s, and drinks must be served in an approved DORA cup.

Those drinks can be carried within the designated boundary, including the fenced portion of Main Square Park, except during festivals when DORA beverages are prohibited from entering Main Square. Shoppers can also take DORA cups into businesses displaying a green “DORA Cups Welcome” decal, but not into other bars or restaurants.

And one important reminder: open alcoholic beverages should not be taken into a vehicle, which may result in a traffic violation.

Check the Town’s map before you stroll, drink responsibly, and direct questions to Councilman Alex Robertson at [email protected]
