Highland Fire Department Opens Its Doors for Family Fun and a Car Show

The Highland Fire Department is inviting the community to its Open House and Annual Car Show on Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2901 Highway Avenue.

Families can tour the fire station and trucks, meet local firefighters, watch live fire-safety demonstrations, explore emergency equipment, and enjoy kids’ activities, giveaways, food, and refreshments.

The annual car show is also part of the day, with all makes, models, and years welcome. Vehicle registration is $20, with lineup beginning at 9 a.m., and space is limited.

Proceeds from the car show support the department’s Shop with a Firefighter program. It’s a chance to meet the people behind Highland’s fire service while enjoying a family-friendly afternoon in the community.back.

Highland Considers AEDs for Police Cars

Highland leaders are looking at putting AEDs in police supervisor and road patrol vehicles after a recent cardiac emergency highlighted how valuable fast access to one could be.

At the Sept. 14 Town Council meeting, officials discussed a quote of about $17,000 for nine units, with a small trade-in credit for older devices. Council members said the equipment could help officers respond even faster in life-threatening situations before an ambulance arrives.

Highland police officers are already trained and certified in CPR and AED use, and newer models are designed to handle the temperature swings inside squad cars. The idea has support, but it has not been approved yet. The next step is to review the police budget and determine whether funding is available or if additional money will need to be requested.
