🏈 Shutout Snaps the Streak: Trojans Blank Kankakee Valley 28-0

The losing streak is over, and the Trojan defense didn’t allow a single point! Highland’s varsity football team went on the road to Wheatfield Friday night and blanked Kankakee Valley 28-0.

Both teams came in still looking for their first Northwest Crossroads Conference win, and it was the Trojans who got it. After a scoreless first quarter, McCormack broke the tie with a rushing touchdown in the second, and that turned out to be all Highland needed.

The Trojans kept piling on after halftime with another rushing touchdown and a pick-six from the defense on the way to a 28-0 final. McCormack also completed 8 of 14 passes for 105 yards and ran for 48 yards.

The win snaps a five-game skid and moves Highland to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Up next is the regular-season finale at home against Hobart on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. at Highland High School.

Come out, wear your blue and gold, and send the Trojans into sectional play on a high note!

🚒 Highland Fire Department Is Looking for Paid-on-Call Firefighters

The Highland Fire Department is recruiting paid-on-call firefighters, and no previous firefighting experience is required.

The department says all training is provided, so this could be a good opportunity for someone who has thought about becoming a firefighter but was not sure how to get started.

Paid-on-call firefighters respond when needed rather than working a traditional full-time shift schedule, giving residents a chance to serve the community while learning valuable emergency-response skills.

Applications are available at 2901 Highway Ave., and anyone interested can call 219-923-9876 for more information.

🍔 Highland Schoop’s Employee Earns Regional Hospitality Honor

A Highland restaurant worker is getting recognized for the way he serves the people who walk through the door.
Lucas Newell of Schoop’s Hamburgers in Highland has been named a RISE Award winner by the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority.

RISE stands for Recognition of Industry Success and Excellence and honors hospitality professionals who continue to go above and beyond in serving guests across Northwest Indiana.

Newell’s recognition puts a Highland employee among this year’s hospitality standouts from restaurants, hotels and attractions throughout the region.

For a hometown restaurant, it is a nice reminder that great service can leave just as much of an impression as the food.
