⚽ Trojans Boys Soccer Top Munster in Shootout, Host Lake Central for Sectional Title Tonight

Highland’s boys soccer team is playing for a sectional championship after surviving a penalty-kick shootout against Munster Thursday night.

Damian gave Highland a 1-0 lead in the first half before Munster tied it after the break. Neither team scored through two overtime periods, and goalkeeper Logan finished with seven saves on eight shots on goal.

In the shootout, Danijel, Evan, Andrew, Castellanos and Donovan all converted their kicks as Highland won 5-3.

The Trojans reached the semifinal with a 4-2 win over Merrillville on Wednesday. Munster had advanced by beating Hammond Central 3-0.

Highland, now 7-9-1, hosts Lake Central (9-6) for the Class 3A Sectional 1 championship tonight at 6 p.m. at Highland High School. Lake Central reached the final with a 9-0 win over Hammond Morton.

🏗️ Coming Soon: Fitness, Smiles, Nails and a Squeaky-Clean Car

Highland’s building department has been busy, with several new businesses and projects moving forward around town.

Planet Fitness has been issued a building permit for space at 8300 Indianapolis Blvd., near America’s Antique Mall. It is not yet clear whether this will be a second Highland location or a move from its current location at 3315 45th St.

Smiles by Gentle Dental, which currently has an office in Griffith, is building on 45th Street, while the Buddy Bear Car Wash project is nearing final inspections.

Downtown, a nail salon that has operated in Schererville for more than 20 years has purchased 2923 Jewett Ave. and plans a full remodel, including a new front deck, accessibility ramp and a mural on the side of the building. The owners have also applied for a town facade grant to help with the exterior improvements.

We’ll share business names, opening dates and other updates as they’re announced.
For the image, I’d go with a generic but polished “Coming Soon to Highland” sign rather than trying to represent all four businesses literally.

🚗 Highland Approves New Vehicle Surtax and Wheel Tax

Highland residents will see new local vehicle taxes beginning in 2028 after the Town Council approved Ordinance No. 1853 in a 4-1 vote.

The ordinance creates a municipal motor vehicle excise surtax and wheel tax, with rates ranging from $10 to $25 for passenger vehicles, trucks and trailers. Buses, recreational vehicles and tractors are taxed under separate rates, while certain vehicles, including state-owned, antique-plated and military vehicles, are exempt.

The Indiana BMV will collect the taxes when vehicles are registered.

Town officials said the new revenue is intended to help make up for declining state funding available for local road maintenance and repairs.

Because Highland adopted the ordinance before the state’s Sept. 1 deadline, the new taxes are scheduled to take effect in 2028.
