Did you know? Highland’s branch had already been serving customers for nearly three decades before the name Centier even existed. The branch opened in 1963, while the bank didn’t adopt the Centier name until 1991.

👮 Highland Police Shift Changes + No Shave November Returns

There are a few changes - and a little extra facial hair - coming to the Highland Police Department.

The Town Council voted 5-0 on Oct. 26 to approve changes needed for patrol officers to move to 12-hour shifts, converting vacation and personal leave from days to hours to accommodate the new schedule.

Meanwhile, the department’s three current recruits are in their 14th week at the police academy and are expected to graduate Friday, Nov. 13, before beginning field training. Three additional candidates have passed their polygraphs and are completing medical and psychological testing ahead of a planned January academy start.

Officers are also bringing back No Shave November in support of the Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation (NICK), which helps local children and families affected by cancer.

Residents who would like to support the fundraiser can donate using the QR code on the department’s flyer, at the Police Department Records Division window or by mailing a donation to the department.

🍽️ Meals on Wheels Available to Highland Residents

Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana delivers meals throughout Lake County, including Highland, and there is no age or income requirement to apply.

The program is aimed at older adults who may be dealing with nutrition needs or isolation, but it can also help:

  • New mothers

  • Someone recovering from an injury

  • People with temporary or ongoing mobility limitations

  • Someone experiencing transportation issues

You can also arrange the service for a family member who may need a little extra help at home.

Options include:

  • Daily hot meals

  • Lighter supper meals

  • Frozen meal packs for the weekend

  • Soups on Tuesday and Thursdays

Pricing is based on a sliding scale and currently tops out at $6.25 per meal. Medicaid is accepted, and special diets may also be accommodated.

Having used the service myself while recovering from an injury, one thing I appreciated was the flexibility. For the daily hot meal, you receive a menu ahead of time and can choose between two entrée options for each delivery day. Menus are to be turned in by the 20th for the following month, and you can choose milk or juice with your meals.

You also aren't locked into receiving meals every weekday. If you'll be out of town or simply don't want one of that day's choices, you can skip that day. Cancellations generally need to be made at least 24 hours in advance.

Deliveries are typically made Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., excluding major holidays, and you're billed for the meals that were actually delivered the previous month.

Residents can apply online or contact the Meals on Wheels Client Services Team to learn more about eligibility and meal options.

🥳 Behind the Scoop: What’s a Celebration Shoutout?

When I was a kid, I remember hearing local radio or TV stations announce birthdays in the morning. Hearing your own name somehow made you feel like a little celebrity for the day.

When my kids were young, I made sure to find those same kinds of birthday shoutouts for them. Now I wanted to bring a little bit of that feeling to Highland Local Scoop.

That’s where Celebration Shoutouts come in.

They’re a way to recognize the people and moments worth celebrating around Highland. It could be:

  • Your child’s birthday

  • Your anniversary

  • Your daughter’s engagement

  • Your husband’s promotion

  • A graduation

  • Retirement

Or it could be another milestone your family is excited about And you don’t have to buy one.

Your first Celebration Shoutout is earned by referring just one new subscriber to Highland Local Scoop.

When someone subscribes using your personal referral link, the system keeps track automatically. Once you reach the reward, you’ll receive an email explaining how to redeem your shoutout.

So if someone you know lives, eats, shops or plays in Highland, send them your referral link. You might just get to make someone you love feel like the star of the Scoop for a day. 💛
