Storm debris piled along a Highland roadway after the Aug. 11 storm. Town officials say crews have removed enough debris to stretch about 17 miles if the truckloads were lined up end to end. Photo courtesy of the Town of Highland.

🌳 17 Miles of Storm Debris - And Your Volunteer Hours Could Lower Highland’s Bill

Nearly two months after the Aug. 11 storm, the scale of Highland’s cleanup is still staggering.

At the Oct. 12 Town Council meeting, Highland’s FEMA consultant said crews have removed enough storm debris to stretch about 17 miles if the truckloads were lined up end to end. So far, the cleanup has cost roughly $4.5 million.

Highland currently expects its share of those costs to be around $500,000, but there’s a way residents can help bring that number down. FEMA can credit documented volunteer work toward the town’s local share of eligible disaster costs.

If you…

  • Helped clear debris

  • Checked on neighbors

  • Delivered meals

  • Volunteered in another way after the storm

Highland is asking residents to log those hours at erassist.com/volunteer. Even work you already completed can count if it qualifies and is documented.

Cleanup is still continuing around town. Crews are repairing more than 100 storm-damaged sidewalks, curbs and driveway aprons, and stump grinding has begun where damaged trees were removed. The town is paying for the stump work itself because it is not eligible for FEMA reimbursement.

So if you pitched in after the storm, don’t underestimate those hours - documenting them could help reduce what Highland ultimately has to pay.
