Fuzzyline Chef Represents Highland at NWI Food Council Gala

A Highland chef will be representing the town at one of Northwest Indiana’s biggest celebrations of local food.

Bob McLellan, chef and owner of Fuzzyline Brewing in Highland, is one of five featured chefs taking part in The Farmer & The Chef, the Northwest Indiana Food Council’s 10th anniversary gala on Thursday, Nov. 12 at County Line Orchard in Hobart.

McLellan has been a chef for 20 years and has spent his life in Northwest Indiana. At Fuzzyline, he describes the brewery as community-driven, with a focus on bringing people together through food and supporting local businesses along the way.

That makes the event a natural fit.

The gala will feature a multi-course meal built around ingredients sourced from local farms and producers. Throughout the evening, guests will also hear from the farmers, chefs and community partners helping shape Northwest Indiana’s local food system.

The event runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and also includes cocktails, live art, music and a silent auction.

Tickets are $150, with a $200 VIP option that includes a meet-and-greet with James Beard Award semifinalist Abra Berens.

A Celebration of Life for Larry and Carol Lynn Brechner will be held Sunday, Nov. 8 at Avalon Manor Banquet Center, with visitation from 1 - 4 p.m. and a memorial service at 4 p.m. Image courtesy of the Brechner family.

❤️ Celebration of Life Set for Larry and Carol Lynn Brechner

Family, friends and former students will gather Sunday, Nov. 8, to celebrate the lives of Dr. Larry A. Brechner and Carol Lynn Brechner at Avalon Manor Banquet Center in Merrillville.

Visitation with the family will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. Both are open to the public.

Dr. Brechner, a 1973 Highland High School graduate, spent decades in theater and education and was involved in more than 230 productions over the course of his career. He also had deep ties to Highland High School and was inducted into the Indiana Thespian Hall of Fame in 2012.

🚧 Prairie Speed Bump Comes Out for the Winter

The temporary speed bump on Prairie is coming out for the winter while Highland gathers more information on what should happen next.

The Town Council voted 5-0 on Oct. 26 to remove it while the town sets up speed-data collection, gets an engineering review and considers a more permanent approach. Council members also raised concerns about safely plowing around it.

Residents have asked about speed bumps on other streets too. Ideas discussed include requiring a neighborhood petition and speed study, then potentially adding permanent speed bumps when streets are repaved if funding allows. functional.

📣 Behind the Scoop: Know Someone Who Deserves a Highland Shoutout?

Highland Local Scoop isn’t just about what’s happening around town. I also want it to be a place where we notice the people - and pets - who make Highland a little better.

That’s why the Give Us the Scoop page has a section just for community shoutouts.

You can nominate someone for:

  • 🏆 Athlete of the Week - Celebrate a local student-athlete for their hard work, a recent accomplishment or great team spirit.

  • 🤝 Good Neighbor - Recognize someone who quietly goes above and beyond. It could be a teacher, police officer, firefighter, librarian, postal worker, coach, volunteer or simply a neighbor who deserves some appreciation.

  • 🐾 Pet of the Week - Show off your furry, feathered or otherwise lovable Highland companion and tell us what makes them special. This is even a spot to feature one that may be looking for a furever home that is currently in foster care right now.

You don’t need to write a polished story. Just send me the details through the form, and I’ll take it from there.

Someone you see every day may be doing something worth celebrating - and the rest of Highland may never know unless you tell us.

🏀 Lady Trojans Tip Off a New Season This Week

Highland girls basketball is back, and the Lady Trojans enter the 2026-27 season after a strong postseason run last winter.

Highland finished last season 18-7, went 5-1 in Northwest Crossroads Conference play and captured the Class 3A sectional championship before its season ended in the regional against Culver Academies.

The sectional title was Highland’s second straight and the 10th in program history.

The new season begins Tuesday, Nov. 3 at home against Bishop Noll, with games scheduled for 5:30 and 7 p.m.

The Lady Trojans then travel to Chesterton on Nov. 5 before returning home Nov. 12 to face River Forest.

Fans can also circle several home dates later in the season, including Andrean on Dec. 1, Whiting on Dec. 10, Lowell on Jan. 5 and Griffith on Jan. 19.
