👗 Annual Style Show Funds Free Parkinson Programs in Highland

A Highland nonprofit that has spent more than two decades supporting people with Parkinsons disease is getting ready for one of its biggest fundraisers of the year.

NWI Parkinsons, based at 2927 Jewett Ave. in Highland, will hold its annual Style Show and Dinner on Friday, Oct. 30 at Avalon Manor in Merrillville. The fundraiser helps support the organization’s year-round programs and services for people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.

The organization’s story began with Elizabeth “Libby” Woodbury, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2004. After seeing firsthand how much support was needed, she helped launch the first fundraising style show in 2005. NWI Parkinson’s later became a nonprofit and purchased its Highland headquarters in 2017.

Today, the organization says it serves more than 2,000 people each year. The offer free programs including:

  • Boxing

  • Yoga,

  • Full-body workouts

  • Cardio drumming

  • Chair Zumba

  • Discussion groups

  • Support groups

  • Educational seminars

The Highland facility has also continued to grow, including accessibility improvements such as a new ADA-compliant ramp.

The Oct. 30 fundraiser continues the tradition that helped start it all, bringing the community together while helping keep those services available at no charge..

🌳 Highland Parks Goes After a Grant That Could Lead to Millions

Highland Parks & Recreation is taking the first step toward a grant opportunity that could eventually bring millions of dollars into the town’s park system.

The Town Council voted 4-0 on Oct. 12 to support the department’s application for a $100,000 Community Parks Initiative planning grant.

The statewide program is funded through Lilly Endowment and is designed to help communities develop long-term plans for improving local parks.

Highland Parks Superintendent Mindi Ray said the planning money could be used for things like park assessments, sustainability studies and community surveys to learn what residents want from their parks.

If Highland completes the planning phase, the town could later compete for an implementation grant of up to $2.75 million.

With property tax changes putting additional pressure on the Parks Department budget, Ray said the planning work could also help Highland look at how to maintain and improve its park system sustainably over the long term.

🏈 A Winning Finish for 6U + Two Undefeated Titans Teams Chase a Trip to State

It’s a big week for Highland Pop Warner, with one Titans team ending its season on a high note and two more still chasing championships.

The 6U Titans wrapped up their season with a win on Sunday, Oct. 18, putting a strong finish on a year of hard work, growth and teamwork.

Now the spotlight turns to Highland’s undefeated 8U and 10U teams, which are both one win away from advancing to the State Championship game.

Both teams play Saturday, Oct. 24 at Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake. After a week of rest, the 8U Titans take on the Griffith Panthers at 9 a.m., followed by the 10U Titans against the LaPorte Slicers at noon in the Semi-State round.

A win sends each team to the State Championship next weekend in Crown Point.

Let’s pack the stands wearing blue and gold and making some noise for the Highland Pop WarnTitans.

💙💛 One team. One town. One family.
