🏐 Lady Trojans Open Sectional Play Thursday

Tournament time is here for Highland volleyball.
The Lady Trojans finished the regular season 15-15 and now turn their attention to the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional at Griffith.

Highland opens postseason play against Calumet on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. If the Trojans advance, they’ll face Hammond Bishop Noll in the semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, with the sectional championship scheduled for 6 p.m. that evening.

Highland has already shown plenty of fight this season, including a five-set win over Hobart on Dig Pink Night.
Now it’s win-or-go-home.

Good luck to the Lady Trojans as they begin their postseason run.

🎬 Whatever Happened to Highland’s Town Theatre?

For generations, catching a movie at the Town Theatre on Kennedy Avenue was part of downtown Highland life.
The single-screen theatre opened in the mid-1940s and later became known for showing independent and foreign films.

But one of the things longtime moviegoers remember most had nothing to do with what was on the screen.

During intermission, the theatre was known for serving complimentary cake and coffee to the audience. It was the kind of small-town tradition that made a night at the movies feel a little more personal.

The Town Theatre closed in 2008 and eventually came into the Town of Highland’s possession in 2012. For several years, officials and residents explored ways to restore it as part of downtown redevelopment, with plans that could have turned it into a venue for movies, live performances, meetings and other community events.

In 2016, Highland was awarded a $50,000 state grant to help refurbish the theatre’s iconic marquee and facade. But the larger renovation never moved forward. In January 2017, the Town Council voted to end the restoration effort and instead preserve pieces of the building such as the marquee and ticket booth if possible.

After years of sitting vacant and deteriorating, the Town Theatre was finally demolished on Jan. 11, 2018.

So if you answered this weekend’s Highland Trivia with cake and coffee, you got it. That unusual intermission tradition is still one of the most remembered parts of a downtown landmark that disappeared, but definitely wasn’t forgotten.
